About Us

Creative Barnsley was formed in 2006 by a group of like minded individuals that had seen the benefit networking events and the Creative Barnsley website had had on the local creative sector. Tracey Johnson, then acting CEO, had used events held as part of a programme of support from Barnsley Development Agency to research the needs of the local creative community and from this is was apparent that artist space was a priority. A trial run in 2007 of an open art show of local artists at Elsecar Heritage Centre proved popular with over 1500 people enjoying the showcase. The initial board set about identifying how studios and show space could best be delivered and this investigate work resulted in the opening of CB HIVE STUDIOS at Elsecar Heritage Centre alongside HIVE GALLERY, a new contemporary space that aimed to bring new audiences into contemporary art and stimulate interest in the arts in general.

HIVE GALLERY and the Studios opened their doors in April 2008. Since then HIVE has hosted exhibitions of work by artists from across the region and the UK including high profile shows by Sir Peter Blake and Patrick Caulfield. More information about HIVE GALLERY can be found here.

During this time Creative Barnsley has also continued to run ad hoc networking opportunities and bring artists together at exhibition previews. The company has also developed three packages of creative learning: Art Ambassadors; B:Come and Animation Workshops. These courses have been delivered locally to great success.

Now into it’s fourth year, Creative Barnsley is delighted to be able to provide a more structured networking programme as part of Enterprising Barnsley, a local partnership funded by ERDF to support business growth in the area. A range of events are planned targeting the various sub sectors of creativity and these will enable local creatives to meet each other, meet potential buyers and hear inspirational speakers across a range of venues including Barnsley Digital Media Centre, Barnsley Civic and HIVE GALLERY. A full programme is available at www.enterprisingbarnsley.co.uk and FREE places can be booked online at creativebarnsley.eventbrite.com

Creative Barnsley is building a network of creatives and welcome feedback and input. Please contact info @ creativebarnsley.co.uk for more information.
